I was able to find records for Achileus Berat (note the first name spelling) and Hemma (Emma) dated 08/05/1887. He was a prof. baker, and she was in agriculture. Most of the site is in Dutch or French but not English, so perhaps another person more fluent than I can find somethinng else.

the book was great. i had NO idea of the terrible ending that was to ensue.

a woman, FAR ahead of the times, that did something not many of today’s mothers would do as far as leaving their children behind.

Good news, an archivist at the Postal Hertiage Museum is interested. From the original, his opinion is the boy could be a telegram messager. FYI, starting 1875 the Royal Mail employed boys to hand deliver telegrams to physical addresses.

My elderly British friend’s opinion was “telegraph boy”. She disagrees with the assumption of the adverts would be gone in August. Her opinion is “not necessarily”.
