Parlez-Vous Francais?

The week of December 7, 2008, we are featuring the following photo as our weekly photoquiz on our website www.forensicgenealogy.info:

We ask our readers:

1. Quelle est la date de cetter photo?

2. Quelle est l’occasion?

There are two bonus questions:

#1. Qui a pris la photo?

#2.  Quelle est le nom de l’epouse de l’homme a gauche?

Readers have to figure out what the questions mean in English before they can answer the quiz.

Without revealing too much about the answers, I’d like to post some information on the Berat family.  We’d like to see if we can find living descendants to whom we can return the photo.

Quizmasters Beth Long and Tamura Jones have been working hard to dig up more info on the Berats.  They have discovered several useful websites.

On http://gw5.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=tonyelyn&lang=fr;p=achillus;n=berat, there is a family tree of Achille Berat (14 Jun 1856 – 2 Mar 1937) m. 11 May 1887 Hemma Maria Vancayseele (1857-1955).  They had ten children:

  • Hector Josephus Cornelius Berat 1888-1973
  • Valerius Josephus Cornelius Berat 1889-1954
  • Valeria Maria Cornelia Berat 1889
  • Esther Irma Cornelia Berat 1890-1890
  • Germain Josef Berat 1892-1892
  • Germain Maria Berat 1892-1893
  • William Antonius Cornelius Berat 1893-1963
  • Zulma Maria Cornelia Berat 1893-1909
  • His brothers and sisters were:

  • Achillus BERAT 1856-1937
  • Maria Louisa Berat 1857-1858
  • Eliza Maria Cornelis Berat 1859-1895
  • Evelina Maria Cornelia Berat 1861
  • William Antonius Cornelius was married twice, but there are no children for him listed on the site.

The Belgian phone books only show two Berats in Poperinge:

    Berat E, Werf 27/A, 8970 Poperinge, Tel: 0476 37 38 65

    Berat H., Boomgaardstraat 4, 8970 Poperinge, Tel: 057 33 39 04

If we get that far, I will be glad to call them in Belgium.  In the meantime, I’ve written an email to Tony Elyn (tony.elyn@pandora.be) the owner of the page about the Berats on Geneanet.  There is only one person by this name and initial in the Belgian phone book:

    Elyn T., Zagersweg 3, 8000 Koolkerke (Bruges), Tel: 050 67 54 95

Here is the state archive site for Belgium: http://arch.arch.be/

I was able to find records for Achileus Berat (note the first name spelling) and Hemma (Emma) dated 08/05/1887. He was a prof. baker, and she was in agriculture. Most of the site is in Dutch or French but not English, so perhaps another person more fluent than I can find somethinng else. 🙂

These websites show the marriage of Achileus and Hemma (Emma) and well as what appears to be Emma’s parents.
