aimed specifically at collectors, including porcelain versions, vintage reproductions, and
depictions of Barbie as a range of characters from television series such as The
Munsters and Star Trek. There are also collector's edition dolls depicting Barbie dolls
with a range of different ethnic identities. In 2004 Mattel introduced the Color Tier
system for its collector's edition Barbie dolls, ranging through pink, silver, gold and
platinum depending on how many of the dolls are produced.
Barbie celebrates her 50th anniversary in 2009, and Mattel released a new reproduction
of the original 1959 Barbie doll to mark the occasion.
Mattel has created a range of companions for Barbie,
including Hispanic Teresa, Midge, African American Christie
and Steven (Christie's boyfriend). Barbie's siblings and
cousins were also created including Skipper, Tutti (Todd's
twin sister), Todd (Tutti's and Stacie's twin brother), Stacie
(Todd's twin sister), Kelly, Krissy, Francie, and Jazzie.
Mattel estimates that there are well over 100,000 avid Barbie
collectors. Ninety percent are women, at an average age of
40, purchasing more than twenty Barbie dolls each year.
Forty-five percent of them spend upwards of $1000 a year.

Vintage Barbie dolls from the early years are the most valuable
at auction, and while the original Barbie was sold for $3.00 in
1959, a mint boxed Barbie from 1959 sold for $3552.50 on
eBay in October 2004. On September 26, 2006, a Barbie doll
set a world record at auction of £9,000 sterling (US $17,000)
at Christie's in London. The doll was a Barbie in Midnight Red
from 1965 and was part of a private collection of 4,000
Barbie dolls being sold by two Dutch women, Ietje Raebel and
her daughter Marina.
In recent years Mattel has sold a wide range of Barbie dolls

Mattel Inc., the maker of Barbie, today sued the Nissan Motor Company over a
television commercial featuring a toy action figure, a Barbie-like doll and a remote-
control toy car.
The suit, filed in Federal District Court in Los Angeles, seeks an injunction to block
broadcasts of the commercial and unspecified damages and costs against the Japanese
car maker for causing ''irreparable injury to Mattel's name, business reputation and
goodwill.''
The 60-second spot, which was created by TBWA Chiat/Day, has drawn much
attention, as well as praise in the advertising trade media since it began running a year
ago. The spot starts with an action figure dropping out of the jaws of a plastic dinosaur
and coming to life to the the Van Halen recording of a Kinks song, ''You Really Got
Me.''

I was interested to learn about the innovations that influenced Barbie's appearance
during my daughter, Alice's, formative years. In 1971: she experienced another facelift,
by way of Malibu Barbie, the all-time favourite Barbie for Canadian women. As well,
she got an open smile and, inspired by the groundswell of feminism, eyes that face
forward for the first time.In 1983, Barbie was given larger, rounder eyes, a more
"delicate" face and paler skin.I felt really out of touch when I found out that Barbie and
Ken split up in 2004. I guess they are still friends though. Nice! Don Draper

Ruth Handler was an American businesswoman, born to Polish
immigrants Jacob and Ida Moskowicz, the president of the toy
manufacturer Mattel, Inc., and is remembered primarily for her
role in marketing the Barbie doll. Barbie was introduced to the
world at the American Toy Fair in New York City. The doll was
intended to be a teenage fashion doll. There has been some
controversy over Barbie's figure when it realized that if Barbie was
a real person her measurements would be an impossible 36-18-38.
The Ken doll was named after Ruth's son.
Ruth Handler had noted that her daughter Barbara, who was

becoming a pre-teen, preferred playing with her infant paper
dolls and giving them adult roles. She wanted to produce a
plastic doll with an adult body but her husband and Mr.
Handler thought it wouldn't sell. But when the Handlers were
on a European trip, Ruth Handler saw the German Bild Lilli doll
(which was not meant for children at all; rather a gag gift for
adults) in a Swiss shop and bought it.
Back home she reworked the design of the doll and re-named
her Barbie after her daughter. Barbie debuted at the New York
toy fair on March 9, 1959. Barbie became an instant success,
rocketing the Handlers and their toy company toward fame, if
not fortune as well. Later, they would add a boyfriend for
Barbie named Ken, after Handler's son as well any many more
other "friends and family" for Barbie's world.
After fighting breast cancer and undergoing a mastectomy in
1970 Ruth Handler, one of the creators of the Barbie Doll,
surveyed the market for a suitable prosthetic breast.
Disappointed in the options available, she set about designing a
replacement breast that was more similar to a natural one. In
1975, Handler received a patent for Nearly Me, a prosthesis
made of material close in weight and density to natural breasts.
Handler was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S.
Business Hall of Fame in 1997.
In 2002, at the age of 85, she died while in surgery for colon
cancer. She was buried next to her son, Ken (who died from
an HIV-related illness in June 1994), in the Hillside Memorial
Park Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Bild Lilli (top), the original Barbie (center) both had a resemblance to Marlene Dietrich (bottom). Read story. Click here.

The doll all my granddaughters received for many birthdays and Christmas. Some loved her and some, well, let's just say Barbies can be used for scuba divers in toy wagons, too. On a beautiful summer day, you fill your brother's red wagon with water and "swim" your Barbies in it.
Our granddaughter (who very much takes after her grandma) never really liked dolls but, as is often the case, people gave hr Barbies for every occasion just because she was a little girl! Well, she did find a way to play with them, though it was hard on Barbie. Completely wrecked her hair and complexion!!
